Howey & Associates, Inc., formerly known as Howey & Klann Agency, was founded by Charles O. Howey in 1953, and has since then become one of the area’s largest independent insurance agencies, well respected within the insurance industry.

Charles Howey first began selling insurance and real estate in a small office in Riverview, then formed a partnership with Leslie Klann, enlarging the operation and allowing him more time to develop the real estate division. The office moved to its Trenton location, 2140 West Road, and continued an excellent growth pattern.

Due to serious health problems, Mr. Klann retired in 1965. Mr. Howey then directed his time and energy to the development of the insurance division, delegating the task of the daily operation of the real estate business to others. With the renewed commitment to insurance, the Agency enjoyed very impressive growth and in fact, built a new and larger office at its present location in Woodhaven, relocating in June, 1978. While the Agency had one additional Personal Lines producer for many years, the sales staff began to increase significantly, beginning with the addition of Charles O. (Skip) Howey, Jr.

Stable, steady growth has continued to be the pace for our sales staff. We now have six producers and a support staff of nineteen, including client service representatives, accounting, clerical, and management staffmembers. We enjoy an exceptional record for length of service; eleven of our twenty-five staffmembers have been with the Agency for over twenty years, and our average service time for all employees is fifteen years.

While selling and servicing abilities are certainly important, a major contributing factor to the past success of Howey & Associates was Mr. Howey’s commitment to developing the best in each of the Agency’s employees, being innovative enough to educate his “clerical” staff and developing them into licensed insurance professionals, insightful enough to be a leader in Agency automation, and confident enough to invite and act upon the developmental ideas of those around him.

With Mr. Howey’s retirement in 1992, leadership of the Agency was assumed by his son, Charles O. (Skip) Howey, Jr., who had become the leading producer. Skip continues to be the Agency’s top producing agent, with an outstanding track record for client retention. His leadership brought a new dimension of discipline and personal development which have proven successful in his sports and coaching pursuits. Along with his management staff, he has continued building on the Agency’s established strengths, operational philosophies, objectives, and values, taking the Company to new levels of growth, diversification, and profitability. He has been an active voice with our company partners’ Advisory Councils, working continuously to see that agents can deliver excellent coverage and service to our clients at competitive prices in today’s market.
